A motorboat is capable of traveling at a speed of

10

miles per hour in still water. On a particular day, it took

10

minutes longer to travel a distance of

4

miles upstream than it took to travel the same distance downstream. What was the rate of current in the stream on that day?

Let v be speed of current.

Let t be time to travel 4 miles downstream.

time = distance/speed

t = 4/(10 + v).    (1)

t + (10/60) = 4/(10 - v).    (2)

You now have two equations in two unknowns.  Solve them to find v.
