To understand this, understand that the division sign is really just a question.
12/3 means 'what do I need to multiply 3 by to get 12.' Answer 4. And 4 x 3 = 12
Now ask 'what do I need to multiply 0 by to get 1.' and you can see that there is no such number.
(If it's any consolation,this was a problem that confounded mathematicians for centuries and led Newton to the idea of differential calculus.)
