A ship leaves port and sails 12 km due south before turning and sailing 16 km due west. It encounters a storm and has to sail directly back to port. What is the distance it must travel back to port?

 

 

A rope runs from the top of a flagpole to a hook in the ground. The flagpole is 9 meters high and the rope is 15 meters long. How far is the flagpole from the hook in the ground?

First one:  This descrbes a right triangle with legs 12  and 16      the direct path back to port is the hypotenuse

   Use pythagorean theorem to calculate the hypotenuse

 

 

Second one is pythgorean theorem too

     one leg is 9      you are looking ofr the other   and the hypotenuse is 15  

        9^2 + x^2 = 15^2      solve for x
