(This was an old quiz question, but I want to see what one of you math people like CPhil will say.)
When slicing a pizza, a chef tries to make the angle of each slice congruent to the angles of all the other slices. If half a pizza is cut into slices with congruent angles of 30° each. how many slices of pizza will there be? Explain.
The whole pizza comprises 360°
If each piece comprises 30° of the circle, there will be ;
360 / 30 = 12 pieces
So, you would not think of 6 as a valid answer?
I read the question as a conjecture of sorts, with "If half a pizza is cut into slices with congruent angles of 30° each," being the hypothesis, and the number of slices being the conclusion, 6.
Did I read the question in the wrong way and therefore, deserve to get points off?
It depends on whether you start with the whole pizza or just half of it.
If you start with half of it and slice it into slices with 30º angles then yes 6 slices is correct.
If you start with a whole pizza and slice half of it as above you'll end up with 7 slices. One of which is half the pizza.
