There is a japanese cargo ship sailing across the ocean. The captain of the ship goes to take a shower after a days of work. Te takes off his rolex watch and his gold chain necklace and sets it on his desk. When he come back they are both gone. He calls in the crew of the ship, which is four people, to his room. He asks the first person who is the cook where he was. He says he was in the kitchen making food for the crew. He then asks the second person, who is an engineer, where he was and he says he was in the engine room checking on the engine. He then asks the third person, who is a deckhand, where he was and he said he was fixing the flag becaus someone put it upside down. He then asks the last person, who is also a engineer, where he was and he said he was checking the boilers in the boiler room. The captain is very quickwitted and immediatly figures out who did it. Who did it and how do you know??????????????

If the ship is from the eastern part of Japan then the flag is flown normally as an icon for “Land of the Rising Sun.”

If the ship is from the western part of Japan then the flag is flown upside-down, because that where the sun sets. This implies the “Land of the Setting Sun.”

The deckhand.

4 crew members, all busy.

If both engineer' and cook were busy, then no one could have turned the flag upside down, so the deckhand lied about it

The deckhand who says someone put the flag upside-down......the Japanese flag looks exactly the same.....upside-down as right-side-up....

Both are correct. Japanese flag upside down is right-side up.

He did lie though about that BECAUSE it is the same upside-down as it is right-side up.
