How would you simplify.

6x-12 / x-2

 3x/2y * 8y/3z * 5z/4x

Please explain.

Because 6 divides both 6 and 12, MG1......

(6x-12) / (x-2)   =

6(x-2) / (x -2)  =    [the  x - 2 terms "cancel" ]

6

3x/2y * 8y/3z * 5z/4x  =  [ multiplying numerators and denominators ]

[120 xyz]  / [ 24 yzx]     [ note that x y z and y z x  are the same thing].....so they "cancel"....and we have

120 / 24  =

[12 x 10] / [12 x 4 ]     [ the 12s "cancel]  =

10 / 4  =

5 / 2

Thank you CPhill :)

My problem is how did you know when or when not to factorise?

Welll, MG1....there wasn't any "factorizing" in the second one.....just multiplying and  "cancelling"

In the first......is see that (6x - 12) can be factored by taking out the greatest common factor between 6 and 12, which is 6....so..... that leaves us with 6(x - 2).....and as I said, the "x - 2" factors "cancel" in both numerator and denominator.....

Does that make sense ???

So, didn't you factories (6x-12) to 6(x-2)
