Zoe, Claire, and Kristin have to cross a river to visit their friend Tasha. They have a boat, but they also have a problem. Zoe and Claire each weigh 50 pounds. Kristin weighs 75 pounds, and the boat will carry only 100 pounds at a time. “Oh no! We can't all get across the river!” moans Claire.
Kristin thinks for a moment and says, “I know a way we can all get across. It will just take more than one trip.”
What is Kristin's plan?

(Hint: At least one person has to cross the river a total of three times.)

1. Zoe and Claire both get on. At the other side, drop Zoe off.

 

2. Claire returns to the other side and gets out of the boat. Then Kristin goes to the other side.

 

3. Kristin gets off and Zoe gets back on to go to the other side. Zoe picks up Claire, and all three friends make it to the other side.
