0.4(5+2x)-0.5=3(0.3x+0.7)

2 + .8x - 0.5  = .9x + 2.1      combine like terms

1.5 + .8x   = .9x + 2.1        subtract 1.5, .9x from both sides

-.1x  = .6                           divide both sides by -.1

x  = -6

Solve for x: 0.4 (2 x+5)-0.5 = 3 (0.3 x+0.7) 0.4 (2 x+5) = 0.8 x+2.: 0.8 x+2.-0.5 = 3 (0.3 x+0.7) Add like terms. 2.-0.5 = 1.5: 0.8 x+1.5 = 3 (0.3 x+0.7) Expand out terms of the right hand side: 0.8 x+1.5 = 0.9 x+2.1 Subtract 0.9 x from both sides: (0.8 x-0.9 x)+1.5 = (0.9 x-0.9 x)+2.1 0.8 x-0.9 x = -0.1 x: -0.1 x+1.5 = (0.9 x-0.9 x)+2.1 0.9 x-0.9 x = 0: 1.5-0.1 x = 2.1 Subtract 1.5 from both sides: (1.5-1.5)-0.1 x = 2.1-1.5 1.5-1.5 = 0: -0.1 x = 2.1-1.5 2.1-1.5 = 0.6: -0.1 x = 0.6 Divide both sides of -0.1 x = 0.6 by -0.1: (-0.1 x)/(-0.1) = 0.6/(-0.1) (-0.1)/(-0.1) = 1: x = 0.6/(-0.1) 0.6/(-0.1) = -6.: Answer: | | x = -6.
