sqr(x+7) + 5 = x

I would like to know which answer is extraneous, 2 or 9, or if I did it wrong.

I would also like to know if it is possible that there is only one answer and it is extraneous.

If both answers are extraneous, does that mean the problem was done wrong and needs to be done again or the problem simply has no right anwer?

sqr(x+7) + 5 = x      subtract 5 from both sides

sqrt(x + 7) = x - 5       square both sides

x + 7 =  x^2 - 10x + 25

x^2 -11x + 18  = 0   factor

(x -9) (x -2)  = 0      and setting each factor to 0, we have that x = 9   or x = 2

Note......9   is OK in the original problem.......2 is extraneous

cool cool cool

EXTORSHEN, I did work it out. I only ask when I think the answer is wrong and made a mistake. When I checked, both #2 and 9 didn't work. Only later, check the first comment, did I see that #9 might be the right answer.

EXTORSHEN thanks for recommending the website btw... but I would like to see a real person do or explain the other questions I had.

CPILL thanks :) love how you explain the steps
