The square root of -1 is known as 'i'which is short for imaginary, since you actually can't take the square root of -1 in normal mathematics. But, with i, higher-level mathematics is able to use it to complete some equations. Therefore, since the square root of -4 is the same thing as the square root of (4 * -1), since the square root of 4 is 2, and the square root of -1 is i, the square root of -4 is 2i, which is an imaginary number. (An imaginary number is any number that is a multiple of i ).
