A tall pole is constructed in a flat parking lot; the pole stands straight up and forms a right angle with the ground. The pole casts a shadow, as shown below. The length of the shadow is 12 feet. Find the height of the pole, to the nearest foot. You may use a calculator. Answer with an exact number.

tan of an angle in a right triangle is opposite side divided by adjacent side

 

tan 80 = height / 12

12 * tan 80 = height  = 108.04 ft

tan(80)*12 = 68.05   ft    sorry....the web2.0 calculator was in 'Radian' mode rather than degree mode !

height of pole  = 12 tan 80°   ≈  68 ft

 

P.S.  -  I think the guest forgot  to change  his calcullator  mode to  degrees
