What is the square root of 16?
It's +4. Don't forget there are two roots, one positive and one negative.
.
The square root of 16, as Guest said, would be 4 and -4.
Note that (-4)^2 and 4^2 both equal 16 :)
Question: What is the square root of 16?
Answer: √16 = 4
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ The fact is that -42 = 42 = 16 but sqrt(16) = 4
5 + sqrt(16) = 5 + 4 = 9
5 - sqrt(16) = 5 - 4 = 1
Dragan is correct
\(\sqrt{16}=+4\qquad \text{By convention}\\~\\ \\But\\ if\;\;y^2=16\\then\\ y=\pm\sqrt{16}=\pm4 \)
So if the sqrt root sign or the power of 1/2 is already in the question then the answer is positive (by convention).
But
If you add the square root in, as a part of the solution THEN the answer is positive OR negative.
