NOTE: I have called the surrounding symbols 'entry nodes' This is not the correct term. I made it up. If someone can help me word it correctly that would be good. Thanks.

I am looking at the buttons above the smilies and trying to work out/explain what they all do.

With each of them you can:
1) Press the button, the curser will be placed between to 2 entry nodes, enter what you need to, move the curser to the end and keep going. OR
2) The writing can already be there, highlight it, press the button that you want. The entry nodes will be placed around the highlighted text. Move the curser to the end and keep going

B for bold, i for italics, u with a line under it for underscore.
Quote will mark the input as a quote.
Code - I assume that is HTML code but I don't really know.
List.......I don't know
List=.....I don't know
[*] ........I don't know
lmg.......I don't know
Normal, with a drop down box. This is for the size of the writing. There are 5 sizes to choose from.
Font colour.... Self explanatary I think.

Centre puts the writing in the centre
Left puts it on the left
Right puts it on the right.
Unfortunately centre left and right puts the output on different lines so it would not work very well to make columns.

sub stands for subtext. You use it if you want to put a little number down low. Like this (X 1-X 2)
Sup stands for supertext. You use it for exponents (powers) Like this 5 3+4

math....You can use this one to display a web2 calc solution. For example (it makes no difference whether you put an equal sign at the end.)
5*(9+1/2)

input....You can use this to display the solution to equations. So long as there is only one variable. angles are assumed to be in degrees.
[input]5=x-6[/input]
[input]y=sin(180)[/input]

inputrad...It stands for input radians. Similar to input

[inputrad]y=sin(3.141592654)[/inputrad]

Another presentation technique of mine.
There is a snipping tool that comes automatically with Windows 7 and, I assume with Windows 8.
It is a really simple method of taking a partial sceen shot and turning it into a jpg file. (The partial is the bit you choose of course)
It is very easy to use and it is my collection method for almost all my pictures. I store my forum pics by date and description so they are very easy to find.
The name of the pictures is at the botton so you can see how I do it if you want to.
When I write in LaTex I enter the output exactly the same way. It is not the only way, it is just how I do it.

Alan just showed us how to do an indefinite integral

int(acos(x)^2)

AND a definite integral

int(acos(x)^2,x=0..1)

Now Alan has shown us how to factor polynomias. He is a wealth of information.

factor(x^2-2x-3)

Samgelinas whas shown us how we can solve a quadatic equation.

[input]solve(24^2+b^2=25^2, b)[/input]
