The owner of the U-Bop Inn decided to sell newspapers to its customers. He sold 15 newspapers on the first day, and 39, 40, 20, 68, 53, and 45 on the following six days. After the seventh day, he computed the mean as 40. What did calculating that number tell him about his newspaper sales? The most he should count on selling was 40 newspapers a day. He was guaranteed to sell 40 newspapers a day. He could not approximate how many newspapers he would sell in one week. Even though he sold significantly less and significantly more than 40 newspapers on a few particular days, he tended to sell, on average, 40 newspapers per day.

Is the question:  What did calculating that number tell him about his newspaper sales?

If so, calculating the average says that the average number of papers sold per day is 40.

If that isn't the question, what is the question that one is supposed to answer?
