then I multiply it by 3
then I add 4
then divide the answer by 4
my final answer is 3 less than the number I thought of in the beginning
what is the number I'm thinking of?

Let's call the number x. (3x+4)/4=x-3
Multiply by 4. 3x+4=4x-12
Combine like terms. x=16
