This question is in my practice test for maths. How will you solve it, with algebraic working? Thanks

Today Penny is 23 years younger than her Father. In 10 years from now her father will be twice Penny’s age. Write an algebraic equation to find Penny’s age today. Then solve your equation showing the working for each step in the process.

Let P = Penny's age now and F = father's age now.

P + 23 = F                           (1)

2*(P + 10) = F + 10             (2)

Use (1) in (2);

2(P + 10) = P + 23 + 10

Expand the left-hand side and simplify the right-hand side

2P + 20 = P + 33

Subtract P from both sides

P + 20 = 33

Subtract 20 from both sides

P = 13

Penny is 13.
