The above image has 3 right angles. The side lengths that are given are marked in the picture above. The objective is to find x. Can you figure it out? :)

We know that 3, 4, 5 is a Pythagorean Triple, so we can draw a dashed/dotted/faint line at the bottom, creating a triangle with the 3 and 4.

You can then create a rectangle using the 4 on the very left and the segment with length 5 that we just created. So now we have a portion of x, which is 5. Because we drew a rectangle and there are two 4's, we can use the Pythagorean Theorem again and find that the last portion of x is 3. So x is equal to 8.

Correct me if I'm wrong smiley

This was a fun problem for people to try out, as I thought it was interesting. I think it is interesting, because many people get the right answer, but the method of solving is incorrect for many people. I was saying that the answer was correct! It is off-topic, so I didn't need it for anything. smiley

Hmm.  I'm afraid the answers here are wrong!  The original clearly says "diagram not to scale".  The diagram is drawn as it is to be misleading! If you don't believe me try to draw it using the specified lengths and angles.

Here is the correct answer:
