Two friends rent an apartment for $975/month. Each person's rent contribution is based on bedroom size. One bedroom is 60 square feet larger than the other. Each person pays $3.25/square foot. Let x be the area of the smaller bedroom and y be the area of the larger bedroom. Find the size of each bedroom and the rent contribution each person makes per month.
We don't really need to use two variables here...let x be the smaller bedroom and (x + 60) be the larger....so we have...
3.25x + 3.25(x + 60 ) = 975 simplify
3.25x + 3.25x + 195 = 975 combine like terms
6.50x + 195 = 975 subtract 195 from both sides
6.50x = 780 divide both sides by 6.50
x = 780 / 6.50 = 120 sq ft is the smaller bedroom... and this person contributes (120)(3.25) = $390 to the rent
x + 60 = 120 + 60 = 180 sq ft is the larger bedroom and this person contributes $(975 - 390) = $585 to the rent
