The admission fee at an amusement park is 1.5 dollars for children and 4 dollars for adults. On a certain day, 281 people entered the park, and the admission fees collected totaled 734 dollars. How many children and how many adults were admitted?

Let  c= # children     then   281-c = # Adults

     1.5 c = money from child tix           4(281-c) = money from adult tix

1.5 c  + 4(281-c) = 734

1.5 c =1124 - 4c = 734

-2.5c = -390

c=156 children

281-c = 125 Adults

We can set up two equations!
1.5c+4a=734 and c+a=281.

We multiply the second equation by 4 but leave the first equation as it is.

So, 1.5c+4a=734, 4c+4a=1124

Subtract, 1.5c-4c=734-1124, -2.5c=-390, 2.5c=390, c=\(\boxed{156}\)children and 281-156=\(\boxed{125}\) adults.
