I have been a lurker on this forum for a long while, and I usually just sit back and read the Q&A. However, recently there has been a visible deterioration in the quality of the site correlating with the release of LLM models, as many answers are being written with ChatGPT.
The problem with AI language models is that they are often incorrect, but it is difficult to tell if they are incorrect unless you inspect closely. They also give spammers the ability to mass-produce large quantities of disguised garbage in a short period of time, making moderation more difficult. The forum exists so that question-askers can get high-quality answers from other humans, contrary to being a middleman for ChatGPT.
So far, nothing has been done about ChatGPT answers, even when it is extremely obvious that they are AI-generated. I think that if we have a strong suspicion that an answer is generated or it fails an AI-detection test, we should delete it, after all it is most likely to be wrong. Currently, one user and a guest account have been spamming GPT answers and personal attacks. If we don’t do something about this, the site would lose its value and potential askers would be better off asking chatbots instead.
It is true that LLMs have reduced the overall quality of the site as they have been abused by some users to generate low-quality content. However, I don't believe they should be banned outright. They are a valuable tool for those who use them responsibly. I use ChatGPT for most of my responses but I always tailor my answers to fit the tone and sentiment of the question, as I take great pride in providing unique and engaging responses. I think the key is to reduce the amount of spam generated by these models and to encourage responsible use.
I agree with you. It's important to strike a balance between encouraging responsible use of AI tools while also mitigating their potential for abuse. AI technology can be incredibly helpful in generating high-quality content and providing valuable insights, but it's also important to ensure that it's used ethically and responsibly. As AI continues to evolve, it will be vital for us to develop best practices for using these tools and to educate users on how to use them appropriately. It's always best to prioritize the quality and accuracy of information over the volume of content.
