Q: What are the relative minimum and relative maximum values over the interval [−4, 4] for the function shown in the graph?

Options:

A. relative minimum = −6 , relative maximum = −15 and −9

B. relative minimum = −15 and −9 , relative maximum = −6

C. relative minimum = −4 , relative maximum = −15

D. relative minimum = 0, relative maximum = −9

Thank you in advance.

Relative minimum and relative maximum values of the function are the y-values of the function.

Relative minima occur at the bottom points of "valleys"; here they occur at (approximately) x = -3.75, x = 0, and x = 3.75 but they are (approximately) y = -15 (twice) and y = -9.  Remember to choose the y-values.

Relative maxima occur at the top points of "hills"; here they occur at (approximately) x = -1.75 and  x = 1.75 but the relative maximum is y = -6.
