If there isn't a sign between the sets of parentheses, it means to multiply.

If there is a math sign inbetween the sets of parentheses, you have to that operation.

For example:

-No sign-

(3)(4) = 3*4 = 12

(8)(5) = 8*5 = 40

(9+1)(6) = (10)(6) = 10*6 = 60

-mathematical sign-

(8)+(9) = 8+9 = 17

(4)-(3) = 4-3 = 1

Hope this helps. :)
