What does r^2 mean?

So to work out the volume of a cylinder you need to do V= pi r^2*h. But what does r^2 mean?

(sorry if it is a dumb question)

"r^2" means that the radius is "squared"

So, for instance, if the radius is 3, the square is 3^2 = 9
