First we have to make these two numbers have a common demoninator. 4 can really be written as 4/1, so we get:

$$\frac{-48}{9} + \frac{4}{1}$$

Like I said, get a common demoninator by multiplying the top and bottom of the second fraction by 9.

$$\frac{-48}{9} + \frac{4\times9}{1\times9}$$

$$\frac{-48}{9} + \frac{36}{9}$$

Add them together:

$$\frac{-48 +36}{9}$$

$$\frac{-12}{9}$$

or

$$-1 \frac{3}{9}$$

which is really:

$$-1\frac{1}{3}$$
