4s - 3 = 98 / 2

Calculate the right half (98/2 = 49)

4s - 3 = 49

Bring the -3 over to the right half so it becomes +3

4s = 49+3

Calculate right half

4s = 52

Bring the 4 over to the right. Multiplication becomes division

s = 52/4

s= 13

@Mellie, you made a mistake by adding the 3 to 49. 49+3 = 52, not 51! :)

OMG!!! I am soooo sorry!! I made you wait this long. But because there is an "s" I am not sure what value you are looking for... Are your looking for the value of x?

I think they want to solve this, Mellie :

49s - 3 = 98 ÷ 2

I'll let you take it from there.....

So, there is no x?

(Continued from CPhill)

98/2=49

So, you have 49s-3=49

Add 3 to each side.

49s=51

Divide both sides by 49

s=51/49... Not sure if this is right. Was there an x?

4s - 3 = 98 / 2

Calculate the right half (98/2 = 49)

4s - 3 = 49

Bring the -3 over to the right half so it becomes +3

4s = 49+3

Calculate right half

4s = 52

Bring the 4 over to the right. Multiplication becomes division

s = 52/4

s= 13

@Mellie, you made a mistake by adding the 3 to 49. 49+3 = 52, not 51! :)

Anon question asker,

On the forum we use * for multiply.   x is kept just for the letter x
