Rational numbers can also be negative. For example, -2/5 is a rational number, because it is expressed as the ratio of -2 to 5.

A rational number is a number that can be expressed as a fraction. If it cannot be expressed as a fraction then it is irrational, like pi, there are fractions that come close to pi, like 22/7 but nothing that is pi exactly.
