Scientific notation is a way of expressing very big or very little numbers so that they can be easily read and understood. (When you get used to it)

eg

$$23400000000000000000000000000000000000 = 2.34\times 10^{37}$$

All those zeros are to hard to count but I know what 10^37 is.

It helps you write large numbers in a much more concise from:

19600000 --> 1.96 X 10^7 is easier to input and look at...

So, why do you use 10^7 for?

The 10^ 7 basically means you are multiplying by 10, 7 times which is the same as moving the decimal place 7 times to the right.

So, 1.96 --> move the decimal place 7 times to the right and add 0s along the way...

No formula...

0.976 --> I usually get the decimal into this form: #.#....

So, 0.976 --> 9.76 and then X 10^(#)...

In this case, you have to somehow get 9.76 into 0.976 so you use X 10^(-1) [moving decimal place to the left once]

0.976 --> 9.76 X 10^-1
