Any number to the power of 0 = 1 because  x^a (x^b) = x^(a+b) so in the case of your problem 5^0, If we were multiplying 5^0 and 5^2, for example, this is the same as saying 1(5^2) or 1(25).  This is congruent with the general example using 5 for x, 0 for a, and 2 for b...so   5^0(5^2)=5^(0+2) or 5^2 or 25. This is why any number to the power of 0 must be 1 and not 0.
