A ratio is a comparison of two sizes, written as a decimal.

For example, if one person weighs 180 pounds and another person weighs 120 pounds, the ratio of the weight of the heavier person to the weight of the lighter person is  180:120  or  180/120  =>  3/2  or  3:2.

Colons are frequently used to represent ratios.

Even though the final answer to the example above is 3:2  or  3/2, the answer is never written as a single decimal. Therefore, 1.5 is NOT a proper answer although  1.5:1 would be. (Frequently, ratios are written with the last number being 1.)

Also, since 3:2 is the answer to the ratio of the heavier person to the lighter person, 2:3 is the answer to the ratio of the lighter person to the heavier person.
