What is the value of |9 + x| 24 when x = 5?

Why add : if there is no symbol it usually means multiply. :)

the absolut vaule of 9+5 is 14, then just mutiply 24

absoulute vaule  is just take what ever number you got, positive or negitive, and make it positive (basicly)
