Scientific notation is usefull for when your dealing with really, really, big or small numbers.

Say you we're dealing with something like the number of hydrogen atoms in the sun.

There is thought that is is aproximatly 1.19 x 1057 hydrogen atoms in the sun.

Say, hypothetically that you knew there was 1.1 x 10-2 grams of mass in each hydrogen atom.

What is the mass of the sun?

Well, it is much easier to solve this question with scientific notation.

Of coarce, with many things in math, you will probably not directly apply alot of the things you learn to your given field of work, but it's still good things to learn.
