If   S is the scale factor, then  if

 

l S  l    >   1       we have an expansion       else  if

 

l S l  <  1 we have a contraction

 

l -5/4  l   =  5/4   >  1      expansion

 

l 3/8 l  = 3/8  <  1    contraction

 

l -1/2 l  = 1/2  <  1    contraction

 

l 0.5 l  = 0.5 < 1  contraction
