Because exponents add when they have the same base. This works for any number except the number 0 because 0/0 is indeterminate. No matter what is used when you raise it to the zero power it will always be one.

Explaination:

(x)^1 times (x)^3 is (x)^4

SOOOO (x)^1 times (x)^3 is (x)^3+1

So if you have (x)^1 times (x)^0   IT WOULD BE (x)^1+0 = x^1

if (x)^0 was equal to , then (x)^1 times (x)^0 woul dbe equal to 0, which would not fit thehow it works.
