I believe you are referring to parentheses (singular form is parenthesis). Brackets and parentheses are essentially the same. Use a set of parentheses as opposed to brackets.

For example, to evaluate the expression \(4-2[2+0.6]^2\) with a calculator, type the expression as \(4-2(2+0.6)^2\). The calculator will prioritize the set of parentheses before doing any other calculation.

In case you are wondering, \(4-2[2+0.6]^2 = -9.52\)
