Look at it like this

If you have $10 and you spend $6 you will have $4 left RIGHT? WHY IS THAT?

It is because 10-6=4

Now if the numbers are big or if letters are used instead of numbers, then you still do the same thing!

If you have $10 and you spend x dollars then you will have 10-x   dollars left.     (see i swapped the 6 for the x)
