Very interesting question. No high level maths required.
This question was posted a couple of days ago.

I think it is really interesting. It looks much more difficult than it really needs to be.

Please note:
1) Ask only one question per post.
2) When asking a question talk about what you have tried for yourself. Then people will take you more seriously and will be more able and willing to help.

Jim Beam, your method is a good one although the answer should have been 38.3 x 10
5
,
also it should then be changed back to scientific notation 3.83 x 10
6
OR just written as an ordinary number.
(3.4 x 10^6) + (4.3 x 10^5)
The best way to do this on a calc is
3.4 exp 6 + 4.3 exp 5
If you use the exp button DO NOT put in any 10s.

Find the x-intercepts for y=3x^2+19x-40
The equation of the x axis is y = 0
So plug this into the formula
You can do it the way Jim Beam said to get an approximation or you can just use the quadratic formula to get the exact answers.

The square root of the number of students.
Too bad if a some students need to be chopped into bits to acheive this.

think about it
You know that 3 x 6 = 18
so how can you work out
3 x what = 18
I mean, how do you have to put the 3 and 18 together to get the 6 ?
Do the same for your queston.
