This is just a perfect square  

$$(a+b)^2=a^2+2ab+b^2$$

In computing, ^ means 'power of'  It is above the 6 on your keyboard.

^ is a caret symbol that in this instance can be referred to as a 'hat'

When you first learn about trigonometry it will used to find the side lengths and angles in right angled triangles.  

The sine ratio of one of the acute angles it it opposite side length / hypotenuse length.
