Let us go through this with PEMDAS. You first start with exponents, where (-1)^2 = 1. Now it is -(1) - 4(-1) -3 = 0.

The negative in front of 1 makes it -1, and -4 times -1 becomes 4. Now it is -1 +4 -3 = 0. You now add and subtract, -1 + 4 equals 3, and 3 -3 = 0.
