If you want to know how to do this on the site calc then look at this thread.

http://web2.0calc.com/questions/how-do-i-type-in-fractions

(highlight it then right click and open in new tab)

If you need to do it by hand then this is how

$$1\frac{2}{5}+2\frac{1}{2}\\\\
=1+\frac{2}{5}+2+\frac{1}{2}\\\\
=3+\frac{2\times2}{5\times2}+\frac{1\times5}{2\times 5}\\\\
=3+\frac{4}{10}+\frac{5}{10}\\\\
=3+\frac{9}{10}\\\\
=3\frac{9}{10}\\\\$$

(As a decimal this is 3.9)
