Here we need to get x alone on one side. This will tell us what x equals.

1/3(2x-3)=5

Now we need to use the distributive property. We can't do the operation in the parentheses, (2x-3) so we have to distribute 1/3 into both 2x and -3. To do this we multiply 1/3 times 2x, and add that to 1/3 times -3.

1/3(2x-3)=5

(1/3*2x)+(1/3*-3)=5

(2/3x)+(-3/3)=5

2/3x + (-1) = 5

2/3x - 1 = 5             ---Add 1 to both sides to "clear" -1 from the left side

       + 1   +1

----------------

2/3x = 6                 ---Multiply both sides by 3 to "clear" /3 from the left side

2x = 18                 ---Divide both sides by 2 to "clear" the 2 in 2x from the left side

x = 9
