THe two values of x that satisfy x^2 + bx + c = 0, for integers b and c are x = 6 and x = -4. Find b.

 

Since, x = 6  and x = - 4 are roots.....we must have that

 

(x - 6) ( x + 4)  = 0     expand

 

x^2  - 6x + 4x - 24 = 0

 

x^2 - 2x - 24  =  0

 

So

 

b = -2
