I believe ND made a slight mistake on this one.....let's multiply both sides by 12 right off the bat..this gives us...

8x + 3x = 17

11x = 17    divide both sides by 11

x = 17/11

We want to find x = something, becuase that will tell us what x equals.

Here's how you'd solve this one:

2x/3+x/4=17/12          ---Multiply both sides by 3 to "clear" this divided 3 from the left side

2x+x/4=17/12*3          ---Now we'll do the same thing to the /4. Here I multiplied both sides by 4

2x+x=17/12*3*4          ---Combine the 2x and x to get 3x on the left side

3x=17/12*3*4             ---Now multiply 17 times 3 times 4 and put that over 12.

3x=(17*3*4)/12

3x=(51*4)/12

3x=204/12                  ---204 divided by 12 is 17

3x=17                        ---Divide both sides by 3 to kind x.

x = 17/3
