Solve for y:
-y^2 + 9 y - 6 = 3

Multiply both sides by -1:
y^2 - 9 y + 6 = -3

Subtract 6 from both sides:
y^2 - 9 y = -9

Add 81/4 to both sides:
y^2 - 9 y + 81/4 = 45/4

Write the left hand side as a square:
(y - 9/2)^2 = 45/4

Take the square root of both sides:
y - 9/2 = (3 sqrt(5))/2 or y - 9/2 = -(3 sqrt(5))/2

Add 9/2 to both sides:
y = 9/2 + (3 sqrt(5))/2 or y - 9/2 = -(3 sqrt(5))/2

Add 9/2 to both sides:
Answer: |y = 9/2 + (3 sqrt(5))/2               or                       y = 9/2 - (3 sqrt(5))/2
