1. What is the difference between a numerical and algebraic expression?

2. What is the difference between an expression and an equation?

3. How is it possible for an expression to be different values?

Please answer all three, and thanks in advance.

1.)Numerical expressions have only numbers, algebraic expressions have letters as well as numbers. Like:

2x+3 is algebraic
4+3 in numerical
4 + 20 – 7, (2 + 3) – 7, (6 × 2) ÷ 20, 5 ÷ (20 × 3) are all numerical
4+20xy-7x, (2x+3) - 7y+20, are both algebraic.

2.) An expression has no equal sign and no 'left' or 'right', an equation has all three. For example:

7x=6+1x is an equation. 6+1x is not.
Same with: 3+2x=12-x, <--this is an equation. 3+2x is an expression.

3.) I'm assuming you mean when there can be multiple answers for one problem, like sqrt(4) can be either 2 or -2 because 2*2=4 and -2*-2=4.

Does that help? ^_^

You just saved me from an evil angry dragon. Also known as my math teacher.

Thank you!

(I'm still not 100% on #3, but I think it's because if you solve the problem in a different order, like order of operations.)

I don't think that is what your teacher means, I really don't know what the question means, it doesn't make sense.

Now, don't be like that Utterly,

Besides, you know it's not true.
Lots of people really enjoy maths.
I love it and I could be wrong but I think Special does to.
There are a lot of regulars on this site that really enjoy maths.

Did you notice, I am australian and we don't call it math we call it maths.

I didn't always like math, but thanks to this year in school, I'm starting to enjoy it. You just have to find something about it that you like.
