Hi! This question was in my math test and i cant work out the answer to it. I guessed it and said 2.5 (which is completely wrong!) and i have tried every combination!
So here it is: 3x+1=8 What is the value of x?

3x+1=8
take 1 from BOTH sides
3x+1-1=8-1
8x = 7
divide both sides by 8
\(\frac{8x}{8}=\frac{7}{8}\\ x=\frac{7}{8}\)
3x+1=8 What is the value of x? Take 1 from both sides(Melody made a typo)
3x =8 - 1
3x = 7 divide both sides by 3
x = 7/3
x= 2 1/3
