We're looking for a number that, when subtracted from 4, equals 6....let n be that number....so we have

4 - n = 6      add n  to both sides

4 = 6 + n    subtract 6 from both sides

-2 = n

This is true because 4-(-2)  = 4 + 2  = 6  !!!!
