4b + 8 = 6 + 4b

 

Note that we have 4b on both sides and also 8 on one side and 6 on the other.

 

The left hand side is NOT equal to the right hand side.

We have to first distribute the 4. This means that we multiply 4 to each individual term in the parentheses and we keep the + sign.

 

So, it is like this:

4(x+2) = 4*x + 4*2 = 4x + 8.

 

Now, we have 4x + 8 = 6 + 4b.

 

Uh oh, we have two variables -- x & b. We cannot really do anything else to solve this equation!
