SOLVING BY ELIMINATION

 

4x+10y=40  → equation 1               

3x-10y=37 → equation 2

 

add both equations:

7x=77

  x=11

 

substitute for x in equation 1:

4(11)+10y=40

44 + 10y = 40

10y= -4

y= -4/10

 

therefore,

x= 11

y= -4/10

Assuming you need to solve for x,y:

From the FIRST equation: 4x + 10y = 40           4x= 40 - 10y        x= 10 - 10/4 y   Sustitute THIS value for 'x' into the SECOND equation:

 

3(10 - 10/4 y) - 10y = 37

30 - 30/4 y - 10y  = 37

-70/4 y = 7

y = 7 (-4/70)= -28/70 = - 4/10

 

Susbstitue this value fo y into one of the equations    x = 10 - 10/4 (-4/10) =  10 + 20/20 = 11

so (x,y) = (11, -4/10)

 

 

Check   4x + 10y = 40    4 (11) + 10(-2/5) =40

                                       44 -4 = 40                       Check!

 

         Another check   3x - 10y = 37

                                   3(11) - 10(-4/10) = 37

                                    33+ 40/10 = 37                    Check !
