2x + 4y  =  22

2x - 2y  =  14

Multiply the second equation through by  2 . So the two equations become:

2x + 4y  =  22

4x - 4y  =  28

Now add the two equations together to get...

6x + 0  =  50

6x  =  50          Divide both sides of this equation by  6 .

x  =  25/3

Now lets plug this value for  x  back into one of the equations to find  y .

2(25/3) + 4y  =  22         Multiply  2(25/3)  to get  50/3 .

50/3 + 4y  =  22              Subtract  50/3  from both sides of this equation.

4y  =  22 - 50/3

4y  =  16/3                      Divide both sides by  4 .

y  =  4/3
