You can think of negative numbers as cold numbers.

If you take away cold from a room then the room gets warmer.

so       - - = +

$$\frac{5}{18}+\frac{3}{8}$$

Now you can either do it on a calculator or get a common denominator and (8*18/2) and add them that way.
